Mediacom Brings 1-Gig to Gulf Coast Region

Latest service launches include 55 communities in south Alabama, Florida Panhandle 8/30/2017 8:39 AM Eastern

Mediacom Communications expanded its launch of DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit broadband service by debuting the service in its Gulf Coast markets, starting with 55 communities in south Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

As DOCSIS 3.1 cable modems become more readily available, Mediacom said it intends to launch 1-Gig on a market-by-market basis throughout the remainder of 2017, including 36 additional Florida and Alabama communities over the next month.

Factoring in the latest service launches, Mediacom said it now offers 1 Gbps service to more than 1,200 U.S. communities.

Mediacom upgraded its HFC network to D3.1 last year, and has also launched 1-Gig service in several other parts of its footprint, including parts of Missouri, Kansas, northern Indiana; Illinois; Georgia; Minnesota; Huntsville, Ala.; southern Tennessee, and Iowa.

In addition to the 1-Gig offering, Mediacom is also introducing a new 500 Mbps service tier in its D3.1 markets.

Early on, Mediacom has been selling a 1-Gig (downstream) service, paired with upstream speeds up to 50 Mbps, at $139.99 per month as a standalone, with a “promotional package offers” that will also be announced at a later date.  Mediacom’s DOCSIS 3.1-based 1-Gig offering comes with a monthly data limit of 6 terabytes before overage charges are applied ($10 for each additional bucket of 50 GB of usage). Mediacom has also been introducing a new 500 Mbps tier in its D3.1 markets.

“Creating true gigabit communities across our national footprint was a central component of the 3-year, $1 billion capital expenditure plan announced by Mediacom in 2016,” Doug Frank, group VP for Mediacom’s Coastal Region, said in a statement. “Our aggressive rollout of gigabit speeds has provided dozens of cities and towns across South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle with a distinct technological advantage in today’s global marketplace.”
