In-Stat/MDR Sees DTV Explosion4/12/2004 8:49 AM Eastern
Unit shipments of digital-TV sets will reach 93 million units in 2008, up from 17 million in 2004, according to In-Stat/MDR (a sister company to Multichannel News).
The researcher said in a prepared statement, "With visible results from the [Federal Communications Commission] mandate on integrating digital tuners in the United States, increasing numbers of terrestrial broadcasters in Europe going digital and the price differential between an analog and digital set coming down to a reasonable level, one can expect great things from this market."
According to the report, "Digital TV Sets: Expect Great Things," while the U.S. market will convert to digital because the FCC has mandated it, the path to digital is less certain in Europe and Asia.
However, In-Stat/MDR said, digital-TV monitors -- particularly flat-panel TVs -- are selling well in countries without digital-terrestrial broadcasting, such as China.
