Time Warner Cable boasts the highest availability and adoption of new technologies, according to Lyra Research Inc.’s “DTV View” report.

Lyra said Time Warner beat out Adelphia Communications Corp., Charter Communications Inc., Comcast Corp. and Cox Communications Inc. in categories such as digital-video-recorder penetration, video-on-demand availability and availability of voice-over-Internet-protocol telephony.

“In the fierce competition for subscribers between cable and satellite-TV services, advanced digital services are crucial to the future prosperity of cable-systems operators," said Steve Hoffenberg, principal analyst for the DTV View report series and Lyra's director of electronic-media research, in a prepared statement.

“For years, satellite services have leveraged integrated DVRs to lure cable subscribers,” he added. “The new generation of DVRs integrated into cable set-top boxes is the latest defensive tactic in cable customer retention. Combined with VOD and VoIP, cable providers possess a formidable arsenal of offensive weapons. Satellite technology cannot support true VOD, and satellite providers can only offer telephone services indirectly through partnerships."
