Xfinity Mobile to Carry Samsung’s Galaxy Note8

Comcast said Xfinity Mobile will be among the services to carry Samsung's new Galaxy Note8 device.

Pricing and pre-order details on the device from Xfinity Mobile are to come, but Comcast, which relies on an MVNO deal with Verizon alongside the MSO’s growing WiFi Network for Xfinity Mobile, expects the new phone to go on sale in Xfinity Stores and online on September 15.

“We’re committed to offering our customers the most popular devices on the best network, for a great price, and adding the new Samsung Note8 delivers on that promise,” Randall Hounsell, vice president of product management for Xfinity Mobile, said in a statement.

AT&T also announced that its customers can pre-order the Galaxy Note8 starting tomorrow, and will be available in stores on September 15. T-Mobile’s also on board to introduce it then, offering it in Midnight Black and Orchid Gray for $210 down and $30 a month on T-Mobile’s Equipment Installment Plan, or $0 down and $39 a month on JUMP! on Demand (FRP: $930).

The water and dust-resistant Galaxy Note8, is the follow-up to the disastrous Galaxy Note 7, which was recalled because units were catching on fire. The new Note features a 6.3-inch “Infinity” HD screen, and an HDR Premium-certified Super AMOLED screen.

IHS Markit said its analysis indicates that the Note8 will be both the most advanced and most costly to manufacture Note smartphone ever, as it will push the flagship smartphone category past the $1,000 price point. IHS Markit estimates the bill of materials cost for the Note8 to exceed $300, equating to retail pricing of nearly $1,000 “given similar gross margin assumptions.”

The research firm also expects the Note8 to dramatically expand the market for Google’s Daydream VR platform because the new device “will be compatible out of the box.” By comparison, Samsung’s support for Daydream on the Galaxy S8 and S8+ required a software update, IHS Markit added.
