Alvarez-Chavez Jr. Fight to Draw 1 Million PPV Buys

First PPV fight in two years to hit 1 million buy-mark 5/19/2017 4:49 PM Eastern

HBO PPV’s May 6 Canelo Alvarez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight will generate more than 1 million pay-per-view buys, fight promoter Golden Boy Promotions announced Friday.

The fight, in which Alvarez won a lopsided 12-round decision over Chavez, will be the first pay-per-view boxing match to reach the 1 million buy-mark since 2015 when the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight drew an industry record 4 million buys.

Alvarez is also the first fighter besides Mayweather, Pacquiao or Oscar De La Hoya to draw 1 million PPV fight buys in the last 15 years, according to Golden Boy.

Alvarez will get a second chance to hit the 1 million buy mark in when he steps in the ring on Sept. 16 in a PPV bout against undefeated middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

"These numbers solidify Canelo as the undisputed biggest name in the sport of boxing-simple as that," said De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions in a statement. "At 26 years old, there is no limit to Canelo's star power as he continues to cross over to mainstream audiences. Canelo only wants to take on the best and the biggest, and we're confident he will continue to shatter records as boxing's new pay-per-view king."
