Armstrong Vies for Seventh Tour de France Win2/16/2005 7:06 AM Eastern
Cyclist Lance Armstrong said Wednesday that he will attempt his seventh consecutive Tour de France victory in July.
That’s good news for Armstrong’s new team sponsor, Discovery Communications Inc., and Outdoor Life Network, which has the U.S. rights to televise the race.
After Armstrong won a record sixth consecutive Tour de France last summer, he committed to racing in at least one more Tour de France for sponsor Discovery, but he wouldn’t say if he would race in 2005 or 2006.
The timing of the announcement could have been better for executives at OLN, who made no mention of whether Armstrong would race in July’s Tour de France when they gave an upfront presentation to advertisers Tuesday night in New York.
OLN officials knew that the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team planned to detail Armstrong’s schedule Thursday, but they didn’t know whether Armstrong would race in the upcoming Tour de France, a spokeswoman said.
Armstrong also said Wednesday that he will compete in the seven-day Paris-Nice stage race in March, as well as in the Tour de Georgia and Tour of Flanders, both of which are scheduled for April.
In addition to covering those races, OLN said Wednesday that it will begin running a new series, Cyclysm Sundays, every Sunday at 5 p.m.
