Azuki, LG Team on Android-Powered Streaming Stick

Azuki Systems and LG have teamed to develop an Android-powered streaming stick that will serve as a small, IP-capable set-top capable of supporting authenticated TV Everywhere applications, cloud DVR services and transactional VOD fare.

The device, which connects to TVs via HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) and is equipped with 801.11ac Wi-Fi, has integrated the Azuki Media Platform and the vendor’s client-based architecture, which makes it capable of supporting authenticated MSO services. One key aim is to give MSOs access to an OTT media platform that customers can install and provision without the cost and hassle of a truck roll.

"The powerful integration of the Azuki Media Platform with the LG Android Stick is designed to help service providers accelerate their transition to IP Video and deliver next-generation TV Everywhere services, including the ability to allow users to purchase TV content subscription once, and watch it anywhere,” said Bruce Lampert, Azuki’s VP of business development and strategic alliance, in a statement.

Azuki did not say if it has secured deployment deals for the device, but Buckeye CableSystem is one of its announced MSO partners.

The LG Android Stick, a media player that will use the Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2. operating system out of the chute, is one of an array of cable-focused products that LG unveiled at The Cable Show in June.

"This integration further validates LG's decision to offer a portfolio of connected TV devices that enable flexible service provider virtual set-top box deployments. Service providers can now deliver a full suite of Pay TV services more quickly, simply and cost-effectively,” said Kurt Hoppe, LG’s director of Smart TV innovation and new business, in a statement.
