Baseball Playoffs Propel TBS To October Ratings Win

TBS’ post-season baseball coverage helped the network pitch an October primetime cable ratings win, according to Nielsen. TBS averaged 3.1 million viewers during the period of Sept. 30 to Oct. 27, a 15% gain over the 2.7 million viewers the network posted during the same period last year.

TBS' win came as the network garnered 4.16 million viewers for 24 playoff telecasts, up 2% from 4.08 million over the same number of telecasts in 2012, said network officials.

ESPN’s Monday Night Football League telecasts helped the sports network average 2.7 million viewers to finish second in the month, although the network last 7% of its viewers year to year. 

Disney Channel was third, averaging 2.1 million viewers, down 7% from October 2013, followed by Fox News, which fell 46% compared to its Presidential election coverage last year to 1.8 million viewers, and US which was down 27% to 1.7 million viewers.

AMC (1.7 million, up 16%); History (1.6 million, up 5%); A&E Network (1.5 million, up 7%); FX (1.4 million, down 9%) and Adult Swim (1.2 million, down 6%) rounded out the top 10, according to Nielsen.

ESPN was the most watched network among adults 18-49 and 18-34, while TBS was the top choice among adults 25-54, according to Nielsen.

Nickelodeon was the most watched network in October on a 24-hour basis with an average of 1.6 million viewers, although that was down 2% from the same period last year. Disney Channel (1.4 million viewers, down 4%) and ESPN (1.2 million, down 1%) finished second and third respectively.
