Bristol, Conn. — Acclaimed director Peter Bogdanovich will direct Hustle, an ESPN original movie based on the gambling life of Pete Rose during the mid to late 1980s, officials said Thursday.

The telepic, which starts principal photography May 17 in Toronto, will be based on the findings of Major League Baseball’s Dowd Report on Rose.
The made-for-TV movie will debut Sept. 25 on ESPN.
Bogdanovich’s credits include The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon and Mask. The director currently has a recurring role as a psychiatrist on Home Box Office’s The Sopranos.
“Peter’s name is synonymous with excellence in film direction,” Ron Semiao, senior vice president of ESPN Original Productions, said in a prepared statement, “His visionary and creative approach is well documented and hugely successful.”
Hustle will be executive produced by Orly Adelson of Orly Adelson Productions, whose works includes the original ESPN movie The Junction Boys and the cancelled ESPN series Playmakers.
