CMT Inks Miss America Pact6/27/2005 10:31 AM Eastern
Those who have grown accustomed to watching the Miss America Pageant on ABC will need to turn their dial to CMT in January to catch the beauty contest from Atlantic City, N.J.
CMT scored a multiyear deal, terms of which were not disclosed, with the Miss America Organization, giving the country-music network rights to the pageant in 2006 and 2007, as well as options through 2011.
Airing in previous years on ABC, the Miss America Pageant’s move to cable did not come without suitors. WE: Women’s Entertainment made a run at the event. Executives at that network could not be reached for comment by press time.
CMT officials said the network plans a multimillion-dollar promotional push behind the pageant, tapping resources across the channel and its sister MTV Networks services. To that end, VH1 will air Miss America shoulder programming leading up to the pageant on CMT in January.
“We're thrilled to be in business with the Miss America Organization,” MTV Music Group president of entertainment and Logo president Brian Graden said in a prepared statement.
"This partnership presents a tremendous opportunity for CMT and MTV Networks, and we look forward to celebrating this American institution across a variety of platforms," he added.
