DirecTV To Stream 30-Plus Channels Out-of-HomeOffering 100 Live TV Streams In-Home While Boosting DirecTV.com VOD Lineup to 19,000 Titles 11/19/2013 2:08 PM Eastern
DirecTV said it will offer authenticated streaming access to more than 30 channels out-of-the-home, including HBO, Starz, Showtime and channels from the Scripps Networks stable, and about 100 networks in the home on PCs and other mobile devices starting November 21.
Tied into the expansion of the DirecTV Everywhere offering, the satellite TV giant is also relaunching its Android tablet app to support both live and on-demand programming. “This extends the DirecTV Everywhere offering across all major devices and screen sizes,” the company said.
DirecTV said it is also boosting its on-demand lineup on DirecTV.com to more than 19,000 titles.
Out-home networks offered through DirecTV Everywhere include, but are not limited to: Audience Network, AXS TV, beIN Sport, beIN Sport Español, Bloomberg, Cinemax East, Cooking Channel, DIY Network, Encore Action, Encore East, Food Network, HBO East, HGTV, Shorts, Sony Movie Channel, Showtime Beyond, Showtime Extreme, Showtime East, Showtime Next, Showtime Women, Showtime 2, Starz Cinema, Starz Comedy, Starz East, Starz Edge, Starz Kids & Family, Tennis Channel, The Movie Channel East, TMC Xtra, and Travel Channel.
"We've significantly expanded DirecTV Everywhere to meet the needs of our customers who want a seamless and consistent way to access programming they want, across as many platforms as possible, without any restrictions," Tony Goncalves, senior vice president, Digital Entertainment Products, DirecTV, said in a release.
Offering out-of-home programming is quickly becoming table stakes for the nation’s top pay-TV providers. Earlier this month, Comcast started to offer up to 35 live TV channels outside the home on Android and iOS devices, plus access to more than 25,000 on-demand titles for streaming and “thousands” that can be downloaded to mobile devices for offline viewing. Comcast’s TV Everywhere Web portal offers live streams of a smaller subset of channels.
Time Warner Cable, meanwhile, has been beefing up an out-of-home streaming lineup for mobile devices and computer browsers that complements in-the-home streaming that delivers live TV streams from more than 300 channels.
