Discovery Beefs Up Programming Staff

Discovery Networks U.S. named a new programming guide.

The company announced the hiring of Tom Cosgrove, who had been serving as general manager for TV Guide Channel, as senior vice president of programming for Discovery Channel, Discovery Times Channel, The Science Channel and Military Channel.

Additionally, Discovery named Jeff Goldberg VP of programming and scheduling and Hannah Beckerman, director of development.

“Discovery Networks is aggressively developing new genres and formats for our expanding programming slate across all of our networks” executive VP and GM Jane Root said in a prepared statement. “By streamlining production, development and scheduling, along with these three key appointments, we are deepening our relationships with producers and focusing on our ambition to constantly bring our viewers captivating, limitless television across all of our networks.”

In his new post, Cosgrove, reporting to Root, will direct and manage the programming activities for the networks' linear and new-media platforms. In addition, Cosgrove -- whose resume includes entries at ABC Family, Fox Family Channel, Fox Kids and Fox Broadcasting -- will have oversight of operational and profit-and-loss planning, new business development and international initiatives.

VP of development Jeff Hassler continues to report to Root.

As VP of programming and scheduling, Goldberg -- most recently a media consultant advising major communications companies including Verizon Wireless and Qwest Broadband Services -- is responsible for the long-term programming strategy for the aforementioned suite of networks.

In her role as director of development, Beckerman will work out of Discovery’s London office, creating and conceptualizing series, specials, stunts, franchises, properties and other programming initiatives for both domestic and international telecast.

Prior to joining Discovery Networks, Beckerman served as commissioning editor for Channel 4 Television, launching the broadcaster's new digital service, More4.
