After a four-year distribution marriage, Discovery Kids and broadcast network NBC are getting a divorce.
Beginning this fall, Discovery Kids will pull tween-targeted shows such as Darcy’s Wild Life from NBC’s Saturday-morning lineup, concentrating instead on developing new original fare for its own channel, according to Discovery Communications Inc. officials.
Discovery Kids has programmed NBC’s 10 a.m.-1 p.m. block since 2002. The initial three-year agreement between the parties was extended by an additional year in 2005.
DCI will funnel the money it was paying NBC to lease time on the broadcast network back into developing original programming for its Discovery Kids channel, which is in 43 million households, according to spokeswoman Catherine Frymark.
