Dish Ships VOD Beyond the iPadNew TV Everywhere App Brings VOD to Android & More iOS Devices, Ties in Twitter and Facebook 5/20/2013 6:14 AM Eastern
Dish Network’s TV Everywhere app now offers authenticated VOD fare on more devices as well as some new social networking hooks.
The satellite TV giant announced Monday that VOD capabilities for the Dish Anywhere app, initially offered on just the iPad and PCs, is now supported on Android devices (version 4.0 and higher) and any Apple iOS device, including the iPhone, that runs version 5.0 and higher of the operating system.
The latest app also lets customers share what they’re watching via integrations with Twitter and Facebook. Dish launched the original Dish Anywhere app for the iPad app in January, and claims to offer a menu of “thousands” of titles on demand. More than 70 networks deliver on demand fare via the Dish Anywhere service, according to the company’s Web site. The company declined to reveal how many copies of the original iPad app have been downloaded so far.
The Dish app also supports remote viewing of live TV channels and the "sideloading" of DVR recordings when paired with set-top models that use the company’s Sling technology. Dish’s latest Hopper-branded whole home HD-DVR is Sling-loaded and also employs the company’s controversial AutoHop technology. The latest app refresh supports the authenticated VOD element regardless of what set-top the customer is using.
The new app also supports an “Audio Only” mode that lets customers listen to live or pre-recorded shows “while doing activities like driving or interacting with other apps on their device.”
Dish had 14.092 million satellite TV subscribers as of March 31.
