Dish Tunes In FS1’s 4K College Football Coverage

Dish Network has joined a small group of MVPDs that are providing access to FS1’s 4K feeds of select college football games.

Dish said customers with the Hopper 3, a 4K-capable whole-home DVR, will be able to tune into Fox Sports’s coverage in the new format on channel 540 (Dish’s dedicated 4K channel), starting with Saturday’s (Sept. 23) game between Oklahoma and Baylor.

Dish said the coverage is part of a broader agreement with Fox Sports to provide 4K coverage of college basketball and Major League Baseball games and NASCAR events.

Today’s announcement comes almost a month after Fox Sports announced it would produce one college football game per week in 4K, for a total of 13 games, starting with the September 2 matchup between the Maryland Terrapins and the Texas Longhorns.

DirecTV was the first MVPD to jump on board.

According to this blog post, Layer3 TV, the Colorado-based next-gen cable operator, is also delivering FS1’s 4K college football coverage. Layer3 TV has launched service in a handful of markets and supports 4K on all its boxes.

“DISH has offered 4K-ready set-top boxes for three years, and 4K TV market share is anticipated to exceed one-in-four U.S. households by the end of 2017,” Vivek Khemka, Dish’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, said in a statement. “The missing element? 4K programming. That’s why it’s great to see forward-looking companies like FOX invest in 4K production, so together we can deliver live entertainment in crystal-clear resolution.”

Dish has not revealed how many of its customers have a Hopper 3, which must also be connected to a 4K TV in order to take advantage of the new video format.

Dish also offers 4K content from NBCU, Netflix, The Orchard and Mance Media, and has delivered select 4K broadcasts, including the Bellator NYC: Sonnen vs. Silva mixed martial arts fight, Planet Earth II, and NBC’s coverage of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad from Rio de Janeiro.
