Hall of Fame relief pitcher Dennis Eckersley has agreed to a multi-year contract extension with NESN to remain as a studio analyst for the regional sports network’s Red Sox pregame and postgame shows.
Eckersley joined the network in 2003.
“We are thrilled that Dennis will continue to play a significant role in our Red Sox game-day programming,” said Joel Feld, NESN’s executive vice president of programming and executive producer, in a statement. “He is one of the best studio analysts in the business. Dennis possesses both a keen eye for the game and a dynamic personality that make him a fan favorite.”
Eckersley spent 24 seasons in the major leagues, which included two different stints with the Boston Red Sox. He spent the first 12 years of his career as a starting pitcher, and then switched to the bullpen to become one of the most dominant closers in the game. In 1992, Eckersley became only the second relief pitcher to win both the AL MVP and Cy Young Award in the same season. In 2004 he was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.
In addition to his work at NESN, Eckersley served as a studio analyst for TBS this fall during their coverage of the American League Divisional Series and American League Championship Series.
