Epix Orders First Series: Lionsgate's ‘Tough Trade'2/10/2009 1:23 PM Eastern
The yet-to-launch Epix network has greenlit its first original series, Tough Trade, from channel partner Lionsgate.
The hourlong drama, set to debut in 2010, will join the movie roster on the Viacom, Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Lionsgate jointly-owned multi-platform network, set to launch online in May and as a fulltime cable and satellite channel in October.
The show will revolve around the Tuckers, a three-generation Nashville music dynasty whose penchant for drink, debauchery and divorce has left them on the verge of bankruptcy.
Weeds executive producer Jenji Kohan will executive produce; Chris Offutt is the creator, writer and co-executive producer. Offcut was executive story editor on HBO's True Blood and is currently a writer and co-producer for Season 5 of Lionsgate's Weeds.
The show was developed by Furst Films, under the company's first look deal with Lionsgate TV. Filming is slated to start this summer.
"We are thrilled to be moving forward with the pilot episode of what is expected to be Epix's first original series," said Mark Greenberg, president of Studio 3 Networks, the parent company of the joint venture. "Lionsgate has an incredible track record of original television series that capture the imagination of viewers and always leaves them wanting more. I have no doubt that Tough Trade is going to build on this incredible creative spirit, driving consumers to Epix to watch and interact with this program."
