ESPN, MLB Finalizing Talks

4/22/2005 9:45 AM Eastern

ESPN is close to finalizing a new multiyear agreement with Major League Baseball, sources close to the situation said.

The network -- which acquired the National Football League’s Monday Night Football franchise for $8.8 billion over eight years, beginning in 2006, earlier this week -- will conclude its five-year, $851 million MLB-carriage deal, which includes weekly Sunday- and Wednesday-night telecasts, after this season.

An ESPN said the network is “still in negotiations,” but it has yet to reach a final agreement with MLB, which didn’t return calls.

Newsday reported that a deal has already been reached.
