ESPN Scores Rights to Pele Film

5/26/2006 5:25 AM Eastern

ESPN, in partnership with sister company Miramax Films, acquired the North American rights to a documentary about the rise and fall of the New York Cosmos, the high-profile franchise that brought Brazilian soccer icon Pele to the United States.

Once in a Lifetime, which also looks at the most high-profile team in the now defunct North American Soccer League against the backdrop of the disco era glitz of New York City in the 1970s, will premiere in select theaters in New York on July 7, before rolling into other markets.

The acquired film, under the auspices of ESPN Original Entertainment, will make its cable premiere on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. (ET), according to a network spokeswoman.
