FXX To Bow on Sept. 2 with 72 Million Subscribers

Comedic Service Has Secured Distribution with All Major Providers 8/19/2013 5:50 PM Eastern

 

Just two days after Fox Sports 1 bowed in a cable-record 90 million homes, Fox officials made it official saying that FXX will launch in 72 million on Sept. 2.

The service, which will initially have a comedic bent with original and acquired series and theatricals, has secured distribution on every major provider, according to Fox Networks president Mike Hopkins.

At that level, FXX -- which will premiere with a 34-episode marathon of Parks & Recreation and showcase the ninth and fifth season premieres of original series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League in the 10 p.m. hour on Sept. 4 -- would have almost 20 million more homes than channel position predecessor, Fox Soccer Channel. According to Nielsen universe estimates for August, Fox Soccer had 52.98 million subscribers.

It was unclear if Fox has been able to garner higher license fees for the conversion. According to SNL Kagan estimates, FX, which will continue to house the service’s drama series like Justified and Sons of Anarchy, counts a monthly subscriber license fee of 51 cents, while Fox Soccer’s is 18 cents per customer.

When Fox Sports 1 launched out of the former Speed service on Aug. 17, it did so at its predecessor’s previous rate of 23 cents with a number of key distributors.

In addition to Sunny and The League, FXX, which along with FX and movie service FXM, comprises FX Networks, will showcase Legit, and late-night strip, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, and acquired series, including How I Met Your Mother, Spin City, Arrested Development and  Freaks and Geeks. Among the theatricals that are scheduled to air in September: Bad Teacher (Sept. 4 at 8 p.m.); Friends with Benefits (Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m.); and Hall Pass (Sept.18 at 8 p.m.)

"With this expansion FXX will be able to deliver even more of the fearless brand of programming viewers have come to expect from FX Networks,” said Hopkins. “And it’s important to acknowledge that none of this would be possible without our distribution partners.”
