Greenlighting an initiative announced last fall, OTT-TV hub Hulu has launched a virtual reality  app for Samsung’s Oculus-powered Gear VR platform that will feature Hulu’s 2D library as well as a mix of new 360-degree videos, including some exclusive VR fare.

Hulu said it currently offers more than 25 pieces of exclusive and premium content in the VR format from Baobab Studios, Discovery Communications, Las Vegas, The National Geographic Channel, RYOT, Showtime Networks, SilVR Thread, Spoke, Studio Transcendent, The Uprising Creative and Viacom.

All 3D virtual films are available via the app to Hulu subs and non-subs.

Hulu noted that the VR app also includes its first originally-produced VR short film, The Big One, that was developed with Lionsgate. Also included in Baobab’s first animated VR title, Invasion!.

Other examples of VR titles offered via Hulu include MythBusters: Shark Shipwreck, MythBusters: Sharks Everywhere, Puppy Bowl XII Highlights, Gold Rush: Welcome to McKinnon Creek, and Survivorman: Guzzling Water from Discovery; 3D Jaguar  - Close Encounter, Encounter w Monarch Butterflie, Joshua Tree Timelapse,  Yellowstone Park, and A Grizzly’s Sense of Smell from The National Geographic Channel.

Hulu subs can also stream the service’s full library of 2D content in the new VR environment.

The new app will also support other devices and platforms “soon.” Among possible candidates, the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive are on sale now and slated to start shipping in April.
