Hulu Targeting May Launch for Live TV Service: Report

Hulu’s live TV service will launch sometime in May, possibly as early as the first week of that month or by sometime in “mid-May,” TechCrunch reported, citing internal company communications and info from people familiar with the plan.

The commercial debut of Hulu’s virtual MVPD service is already a bit behind schedule, as it was originally expected to launch sometime in Q1 2017.

Hulu hasn’t announced a precise launch date for the service and declined to comment on the report. It has introduced a promotional teaser site about its new service/experience and a way to request an invite for its beta.

Hulu uses CES in January to offer a glimpse of the OTT TV service and some of the bells and whistles that will grace the new experience that will underpin it.

The live TV service is expected to be a slimmed-down channel bundle that will start at less than $40 per month, include access to Hulu’s SVOD service, and feature a cloud DVR, multi-stream subscriptions, and a way to personalize the experience for individual viewers.

TechCrunch said some add-on pricing is still being sorted out, but noted that some upgrades, such as unlimited streams and a cloud DVR could, sell together for “under $20,” or a cloud DVR upgrade might sell separately for $14.99.

In addition to competing with traditional MVPDs, Hulu will also be facing off with virtual MVPDs such as Sling TV, fuboTV, DirecTV Now,  YouTube TV, and PlayStation Vue.
