Big Blue Buys Multiscreen Specialist (Updated) 12/08/2015 10:15 AM Eastern Last updated at 12/08/2015 11:12 AM

Signaling more consolidation for the white-hot multiscreen sector, IBM has acquired Clearleap, the Duluth, Ga.-based cloud video specialist.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but IBM said the deal will enable it to beef up its cloud computing initiatives and help users access video from multiple devices. The deal comes just weeks after IBM nabbed The Weather Company’s B2B, mobile and cloud-based Web properties, and follows IBM's 2014 acquisition of Aspera, which enables large data transfers over broadband networks, and last month's purchase of Cleversafe, a maker of object-based storage software and appliances.

Big Blue said it will integrate Clearleap into its IBM Cloud platform, which manages video via the Web and other mobile, connected devices.

The deal provides IBM with access to Clearleap’s stable of customers, including HBO, A+E Networks, the National Football League, BBC America, Sony Movie Channel, Time Warner Cable and Verizon Communications, among others.

Founded in 2007, privately held Clearleap has raised $45.55 million, according to CrunchBase.

Update: All 110 Clearleap employees will be joining IBM. Braxton Jarratt will remain CEO of Clearleap, a company official said.

“Clearleap joins IBM at a tipping point in the industry when visual information and visual communication are not just important to consumers, but are exploding across every industry," said Robert LeBlanc, SVO of IBM Cloud, in a statement. "This comes together for a client when any content can be delivered quickly and economically to any device in the most natural way."

“With consumer demand for video growing exponentially, the business of creating compelling and personalized video experiences is booming,” Jarratt added. “This makes the acquisition by IBM, a global leader in technology, a perfect fit. As a part of IBM, we can extend the capabilities and global reach of the Clearleap innovations to grow and scale like never before.”
