Irdeto, a maker of video and digital security products, said it identified 239 streams that illegally distributed Saturday’s bout between undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather and UFC mixed martial arts champion Conor McGregor.

Those streams reached about 2.93 million viewers, according to Irdeto’s estimates.

Irdeto said 67 streams were provided via “traditional” pirate streaming web sites, and several exploited social media channels such as Facebook, YouTube, Periscope, Twitch to redistribute the PPV event.

Irdeto estimates that 165 social media streams distributed the fight illegally, and identified 42 advertisements for illicit streaming devices on e-commerce web sites such as Amazon, eBay and Alibaba that offered access to the bout.

The vendor also found six streams available via streaming plug-ins for Kodi media player, which have been a thorn in the side of studios and other premium suppliers of content.

“Live sports are a cornerstone of global piracy, with thousands of sites providing illegal content attracting millions of viewers,” Rory O’Connor, SVP of cybersecurity services at Irdeto, said in a statement.  “When combatting live sports piracy, speed in disrupting piracy is essential. This is especially the case with premium events like this past weekend’s Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing match. The most effective strategy is an intelligence-driven approach with a 360-degree view of piracy. By identifying and stopping pirate streams in real-time through specialized knowledge and technology, content owners and operators are able to protect revenue and deliver a greater user experience.”
