Bob Reid to Run Africa Channel
Los Angeles — Former Discovery Health general manager Bob Reid will head up the upstart Africa Channel.
Reid, an award-winning documentary producer, spent seven years at Discovery Health, including a stint as general manger from 2001 to 2004. He is charged with leading the basic cable network, which will feature music, movies, reality and news and information programming produced from the continent. The network has already secured a digital basic carriage agreement with Cox Communications Inc.
Reid had been consulting with Africa Channel for several months prior to his appointment.
Akimbo Adding MLB Fare for Fall VOD
San Mateo, Calif. — Akimbo Systems will add content from Major League Baseball prior to the fall playoffs for its Internet-based video-on-demand service.
Akimbo will receive condensed versions of all games and a selection of MLB highlight clips. It will also get rights to historical games and action from previous playoff and World Series games.
The condensed games will be available by 6 a.m. the next morning, Akimbo’s founder and executive VP of sales and marketing Steve Shannon said. MLB also carries condensed games on its Web site.
Subscribers buy the Akimbo box for $199 and pay $10 a month for a programming package.
Charter Will Launch ImaginAsian TV
New York — Charter Communications Inc. will distribute ImaginAsian TV as part of a new carriage agreement.
The network, whose programming targets the Asian-American community, is currently in 2 million homes.
