Principal photography is set to begin in New Orleans this month on Lifetime Original Movie Life Is Not a Fairy Tale: The Fantasia Barrino Story (working title).

Emmy Award- and Golden Globe-winning director Debbie Allen (Fame, Girlfriends) will direct the film, depicting the true story of Fantasia Barrino, “a teen-age single mother who overcame poverty, sexual abuse and illiteracy by using her incredible voice to rise to national prominence as the winner of American Idol,” Lifetime Television said in a prepared statement.

Barrino will portray herself, and the cast includes Loretta Devine (Dreamgirls, Crash, Boston Public, Waiting to Exhale), Viola Davis (Traffic, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Kadeem Hardison (A Different World, Biker Boyz) and Jamia Simone Nash (My Wife and Kids).

Life Is Not a Fairy Tale: The Fantasia Barrino Story is set to debut on Lifetime in August.
