John Malone can add lord of the manor to his resume, after the Liberty Media chairman and cable legend emerged as the buyer of a 142-year old Irish castle.
According to the Irish Times, Malone paid 7.225 million euros ($9.5 million) for Humewood Castle, a 15-bedroom, 38,000-square-foot estate on 427-acres in County Wicklow.
Malone, the largest private landowner in the U.S., plans to refurbish the estate, according to the newspaper. The property includes woods, private lakes and stables, three staff cottages and three gate lodges. Malone’s family has Irish roots in County Cork.
Humewood was formerly owned by Galway real estate developer John Lally’s Lalco Holdings, which paid 25 million euros ($33.1 million) for the property in 2006 to German businesswoman Renata Coleman, making it the most expensive country house sale in Ireland at the time. Lalco had planned to turn the estate into a 250 million euro luxury golf development, but scrapped those plans after the economy turned sour.
