Mayweather Still The OneMayweather Earns Decision Win Over Canelo Alvarez In Highly Anticipated PPV Fight 9/15/2013 3:56 AM Eastern
Floyd Mayweather continued his reign as boxing’s pound-for-pound champion as he easily defeated Saul Canelo Alvarez in Showtime Sports’ big pay-per-view event Saturday.
The undefeated Mayweather won a majority decision against the 23-year old Mexican champion by using his speed and ring skills to consistenly beat Alvarez to the punch while avoiding the former junior welterweight champion’s powerful punches. Mayweather was guaranteed $41 million for his work in the ring, while Alvarez was expected to make more than $10 million for the fight, according to industry sources.
The event, which at a suggested retail price of $64.95 was the most expensive in PPV history, is expected to surpass the record $132 million PPV revenue mark set by the 2007 Mayweather-Oscar De La Hoya fight, according to the fight's promotion company Golden Boy Promotions. The event also could approach the 2.4 million PPV buy mark set by Mayweather-De La Hoya, according to Golden Boy.
