Microsoft and a handful of its content partners announced authenticated app launches on the Xbox 360 and offered updates for what's coming to the new Xbox One console.
On the Xbox 360 side of the gaming ledger, Starz has launched its Encore Play and Movieplex Play authenticated TV Everywhere apps, joining Starz Play, which debuted on the Xbox 360 last December. Starz and Microsoft are also developing apps for the new Xbox One, and are “on track” to launch them later this year.
Starz has already developed apps for several other platforms, including PC browsers, iOS- and Android-powered tablets and smartphones, as well as the Kindle Fire/Fire HD, Nook HD, Nook HD+ and select Google nexus devices.
Operators with access to one or more ‘Play’ apps include Cablevision Systems, CenturyLink Prism, DirecTV, Verizon FiOS, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, Suddenlink Communications, AT&T U-verse TV, Google Fiber, Cox Communications, Atlantic Broadband, GCI, Grande Communications, Hawaiian Telecom, Mediacom Communications, and Wave Broadband/Astound. Comcast, Charter Communications and Dish Network currently offer TV Everywhere content from Starz through their own platforms but not yet via Starz’s individual Play apps.
EPIX, meanwhile, is also preparing an app for the Xbox One. EPIX also announced it has extended authentication to Time Warner Cable customers (Digital Basic and Preferred TV subs) on the Xbox 360, and will be offering free access to the app through June 18. EPIX has also extended TVE support to PC browsers, iOS and Android, as well as the Sony PS3 and PS4, Kindle Fire, and the Windows 8 platform.
In addition to TWC, MSOs with EPIX TVE rights include Charter, Cox, Hawaiian Telecom, Mediacom Communications, Dish Network, Suddenlink, EPB, Home Telecom, and Verizon FiOS,
In time for Major League Baseball’s Opening Day, Microsoft has launched MLB.TV on the Xbox One.
To access all of the above-mentioned apps, Xbox users must get service from an MVPD with the required TV Everywhere rights and purchase an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
