MTVN Employees Face the Music

MTV Networks Thursday laid off close to 100 employees as part of a restructuring of the company.

Sources close to the company said most of the layoffs occurred mostly within MTVN’s strategic-services group, as well as within MTV: Music Television and VH1, although no top senior executives lost their jobs.

The source added that the layoffs occurred as part of an overall company shift toward more multiplatform activity, and they were not related to Viacom Inc.’s spinoff of MTVN.

Indeed, the programmer earlier this week announced the launch of Urge, an online-music service that will be integrated into Microsoft Corp.’s new “Windows Media Player.”

No further layoffs are expected, and sources said the company may look to boost employee levels within its digital operations in the near future.

An MTVN spokesman would not comment on the matter.
