No Small Wonder: ABC Family Acquires Network Premiere Rights To 'Alice'3/08/2010 8:23 AM Eastern
ABC Family has secured the network TV premiere rights to Alice In Wonderland.
The pact for the Walt Disney Pictures theatrical from Disney-ABC Domestic Television, terms of which were not disclosed, will bring Alice in Wonderland to the network in 2012.
Available in 3D, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helen Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Mia Wasikowska as a 19-year-old Alice, grossed some $210.3 million worldwide during its opening weekend, including $116.3 million domestically. As such, the movie became the highest-grossing first-quarter opener and the biggest three-day, non-holiday take for a non-sequel in the States.
It was unclear at presstime if ABC Family plans to air the film in 3D.
"We're thrilled to bring Alice in Wonderland to ABC Family viewers," said Tom Zappala, executive vice president, program acquisitions and scheduling, ABC Cable Networks Group, in a statement. "This Disney film has been one of the most anticipated releases of the year, and with its captivating sense of fun and imaginative spirit, it is a perfect fit our millennial viewers."
