Showtime: Mayweather-Alvarez Highest Grossing PPV Event EverFight Could Challenge Mayweather-De La Hoya's 2.4 Million PPV Buy Mark 9/19/2013 5:29 PM Eastern
Saturday’s Floyd Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez pay-per-view boxing match will finish as the most lucrative event ever for the PPV category, according to fight distributors Showtime and Golden Boy Promotions.
The fight, in which Mayweather defeated Alvarez in a majority decision to remain undefeated, has generated nearly $150 million in PPV revenue to date, according to Showtime, eclipsing the mark of $136 million set by the 2007 Mayweather-Oscar De La Hoya fight. Mayweather-Alvarez carried a record suggested retail price of $64.95 for the standard definition feed and $74.95 for high definition orders.
Early projections put the fight on pace to generate 2.2 million PPV buys, making it the second PPV event ever to surpass 2 million buys and besting the 1.95 million buys generated by the 1997 Evander Holyfield-Mike Tyson heavyweight championship rematch.
The fight has a chance to top the record 2.4 million PPV buys from Mayweather-De La Hoya, according to Showtime. Network officials added the initial report immediately following De La Hoya-Mayweather was 2.15 million PPV buys.
