Showtime Renews Sleeper Cell

4/04/2006 4:25 AM Eastern

Showtime Networks Inc. will return controversial terrorist-tinged series Sleeper Cell for its sophomore season sometime in 2007.

Showtime ordered eight new episodes of the Golden Globe-nominated miniseries, which focuses on the inner workings of a Los Angeles-based Islamic terrorist cell, Showtime president of entertainment Robert Greenblatt said.

"Sleeper Cell became an instant signature show for us, and it has all of the hallmarks of great premium cable,” Greenblatt said in a prepared statement. "It’s relevant, fearless and unlike anything else on television. Unfortunately, terrorism is a part of our daily lives, and this show is one of the few things in our pop culture to grapple with this subject matter in a realistic way.”
