Sling TV Expands Reach of ‘Local Now’

Extends Ad-Free Service to Roku Devices 3/04/2016 8:45 AM Eastern

Adding some additional local flair to its streaming offerings, Sling TV said it has extended its Local Now service to Roku devices.

Previously offered on select devices supported by Sling TV, Local Now is an ad-free channel from The Weather Channel that provides current, localized news, weather, sports and traffic updates.

In the announcement, spotted this week by TV Predictions, Sling TV notes that Local Now provides localized updates that are relevant to 207 markets in partnership with partners such as The Weather Channel, the Associated Press, SportRadar, TrafficLand, and INRIX.

“It’s localized content cycles on a short loop that’s updated in real time. So if you miss something, you can catch it again only a few minutes later,” Sling TV explained, noting that Local Now uses the subscriber’s IP address to provide that localized feed.

Local Now is offered as part of Sling TV’s core, $20 per month OTT-TV package, which includes networks such as ESPN, AMC, Freeform, Lifetime, Bloomberg Television and CNN, among others.

In addition to Roku devices, Local Now is supported by Sling TV on the Amazon Fire TV box, Fire TV Stick, Fire tablets, Android smartphones and tablets, Android TV platforms (including Google’s Nexus Player), Google Chromecast, and Web browsers. Sling TV expects to support Local Now on its other supported devices (such as the Channel Master, the Xbox One and iPhones and iPads) in the coming weeks.
