'Smiley' Stands as TV One's Top Series Series Debut

TV One executives are smiling following the premiere of The Rickey Smiley Show, which stands as the top debut in network history.

The Sept. 18 bow at 9 p.m. registered a 1.08 household ratings and 621,000 homes, according to Nielsen data. Among adults 25 to 54, the premiere averaged a 0.75 rating, translating into 468,000 of those viewers. The subsequent installment at 9:30 p.m. improved on the inaugural episode with a 1.12 household rating and 642,000 homes, including a 0.83 mark and 515,000 persons 25 to 54

Over the four telecasts of the premieres and encores, The Rickey Smiley Show posted a gross average audience of nearly 2.3 million viewers, said network officials.

"TV One's investment in original programming continues to propel the network forward as we reflect the breadth and depth of true black life," said network president and CEO Wonya Lucas. "We are excited to herald the returning popularity of the black family sitcom as illustrated through The Rickey Smiley Show’s success."

The show stars Smiley, as a comedian, nationally syndicated radio personality, and single father of three juggling life at work and at home. Upcoming guest appearances include actress Lisa Raye, gospel music artist Fred Hammond, rapper Waka Flocka and Smiley's signature characters “Bernice Jenkins” and “Joe Willie.”
