Sony Livens Up the PS3WWE’s ‘SummerSlam’ Is First Event To Showcase Gaming Console’s New Live Events Viewer App 8/14/2013 6:24 AM Eastern
The Sony Playstation 3 is getting ready to grapple with its first live pay-per-view event, and become the latest over-the-top player that's looking to siphon away a revenue source that usually flows toward traditional pay TV operators.
The media giant launched the Live Events Viewer app for the gaming console on Tuesday, which Sony will use to deliver a variety of live sports, concerts and other entertainment events.
The app, offered on the PlayStation Store, is free, but the initial event offered on it will set consumers back a few bucks.
The first live event coming to the PS3 Live Events Viewer is the WWE’s SummerSlam, which sells for $44.95 and gets underway this Sunday (August 18) at 7 p.m. ET. The event, highlighted by the championship match between John Cena and Daniel Bryan, will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The Microsoft Xbox 360, Samsung Smart TVs and Web browsers will also have access to the event’s live stream.
Sony said it will offer a mix of free and pay-per-view live events each week. The app will also feature past events that can be streamed on demand.
