Viaplay Rides thePlatform

thePlatform, the Comcast-owned media publisher, has landed a deal to provide the backend management for Viaplay’s online video service for Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland.

Viaplay, part of international entertainment broadcasting group Modern Tims Group, provides both online and set-top-box based video services.

Under the deal, thePlatform’s cloud-based mpx video publishing system will manage Viaplay’s service on PCs, smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles, as well as Viaplay’s own over-the-top set-top box. thePlatform’s role covers video ingest and metadata management, subscriber management and viewing rights enforcement, and automated publishing across various device and video player profiles.

“mpx enables us to centralize our video publishing efforts across all our territories and let our subscribers watch their favorite movies, sports and TV shows on their device of choice when convenient to them," said Niclas Ekdahl, CEO of Viaplay, in a statement.

thePlatform CEO Ian Blaine noted that his company is boosting investment in regional infrastructure as part of its expanding commitment to Europe. Customers in the region are supported by thePlatform’s  geographically redundant datacenters in Europe and North America. In addition, thePlatform recently appointed Jan Bertil Dahms (Germany), Jon Roberts (UK), and Richard Cross (Eastern Europe) as sales executives in the region, reporting to Simon McGrath, General Manager, Europe.

thePlatform’s customer roster includes  A+E Networks, BT, Cablevision Systems, Comcast, Cox Communications, Liberty Global, Rogers Communications , Shaw Media, and Time Warner Cable, among others.
