Women’s Soccer Circuit Starts National Telecasts with Fox Sports Outlets on July 14Nine Matches, Including Postseason Trio, Will Bring Exposure for Fledgling League 6/13/2013 4:59 PM Eastern
The National Women’s Soccer League will kick off its national TV schedule with Fox Sports Media Group on July 14.
The eight-team circuit will have nine matches televised nationally during its rookie campaign -- six regular-season contests, plus its semifinals and championship.
The founding clubs are the Boston Breakers, Chicago Red Stars, FC Kansas City, Portland Thorns FC, Seattle Reign FC, Sky Blue FC, the Washington Spirit and the Western New York Flash. Based in Chicago, the NWSL is supported by the United States Soccer Federation, Canadian Soccer Association and Federation of Mexican Football.
Fox Soccer will televise six regular-season games, starting with the Seattle Reign FC, which features U.S.women’s national team stalwarts Megan Rapinoe and Hope Solo, against the Washington Spirit,whose roster includes Canadian international Diana Matheson and U.S. teammates Lori Lindsey, Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris, on Bastille Day at 8:30 p.m.
The networks for the postseason matches – the semis on Aug. 24 and the final a week later, has not yet been announced. Fox Soccer is expected to morph into entertainment service on FXX come Sept. 2.
