Sree Kotay, the chief technology officer and EVP at Comcast Cable, has left the company for personal reasons, the company confirmed to Multichannel News.

The exact circumstances that led to his departure were not immediately known, but multiple industry sources said Kotay left Comcast sometime last week.

Kotay’s departure comes almost a year after he was promoted to the CTO post, succeeding Tony Werner, who was elevated last May to president, technology and product. In addition to leading Comcast’s software and technology strategy, Kotay was also overseeing Comcast Innovation Labs, the company’s advanced research and development group.

Comcast has not announced who will succeed Kotay in the CTO role. Comment from Kotay has been sought.

UPDATE: Kotay declined to comment at this time.

Kotay, who joined Comcast in 2007 as chief software architect, played a major role in the development and launch of X1, a next-gen, multiscreen video platform that has been key to helping Comcast turn around its pay TV business. Comcast added 161,000 video subs in 2016, and has also had success syndicating its X1 platform to other MSOs, including Cox Communications and two Canada-based service providers -- Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications.

Kotay has also been credited for helping to pioneer the Reference Design Kit (RDK), a preintegrated software platform for video devices and gateways that is now managed by Comcast, Liberty Global and Charter Communications (via Charter’s acquisition of  Time Warner Cable). In addition to accelerating product roadmaps, RDK has been adapted to support both set-tops and video client devices (RDK-V) as well as broadband gateways (RDK-B).

Prior to Comcast, Kotay was SVP of technology at AOL, and was a founder and CTO of Viewpoint Corporation, a software company focusing on rich media advertising and advanced 2D/3D and motion graphics technology that was acquired by AOL in 2003.

In 2014, Multichannel News recognized Kotay as one of its Technology Executives of the Year in the service provider category, largely for his role in running point on the technical underpinnings of Comcast’s IP video rollout and his focus on helping Comcast to improve the customer experience.
