Comcast Lights Up DOCSIS 3.1 in More Markets

Comcast confirmed that it has launched DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit Internet service in several more markets, including all of Colorado and Oregon; Kansas City; Houston; Seattle, southwest Washington, San Francisco and most of the Bay Area in California.

Those launches expand the reach of a 1 Gbps (downstream) service that rides on DOCSIS 3.1. Comcast has also launched that service in Utah; Detroit, Mich.; Huntsville and Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Indiana; Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga, Tenn.; Chicago; Atlanta; and Ft. Lauderdale, Jacksonville, and Miami, Fla.

Comcast has been selling 1-Gig service in its DOCSIS 3.1 markets for $159.95 without a contract but has also been testing “promotional prices” that require a one-year contract. In Utah, for example, Comcast launched with a promotional price of $70 per month in Salt Lake City, Provo and North Ogden, and $109.99 per month in other parts of the state.

Per Comcast’s gigabit rollout plan, markets on tap for D3.1-based services include Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Boston, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Vermont, West Virginia, Baltimore, New Jersey, Virginia and Washington, D.C.  Comcast has not announced launching timing in those markets.

Comcast has also rolled out “Gigabit Pro,” a more expensive symmetrical 2 Gbps service that uses fiber-to-the-premises technologies, in most of the MSO’s markets.
