Google Fiber’s deal with Overland Park, Kan., is in a holding pattern until next month, but its agreement with nearby Lenexa is a go.
On Tuesday, Lenexa’s city council unanimously voted in favor of an agreement that paves the way for Google Fiber and its bundle of 1 Gbps broadband and subscription TV services. Google Fiber announced the Lenexa approval on its blog, but didn’t estimate when consumers and businesses there can expect to get access to the coming fiber network.
Lenexa has a population of roughly 49,398 and 20,832 housing units, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.
And Google’s had its eye on Lenexa for a while. Last month, Google recognized Lenexa as an inaugural “eCity,” a designation awarded to the “strongest online business community in each state” based on an broad set of criteria. Google selected its first eCity winners in partnership with independent research firm Ipsos Mori.
Google Fiber said Lenexa is its 17th Kansas City-area expansion city, in addition to Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo. Other K.C.-area cities that have given Google Fiber the green light recently include Mission Hills, Fairway, Roeland Park, Merriam, Leawood, Prairie Village, Mission, Shawnee, and Olathe, Kan.; and Lee’s Summit, Gladstone, and Grandview, Mo.
Google Fiber also has plans to launch services on the iProvo network in Provo, Utah, later this year, and to start connecting homes in Austin, Texas, by mid-2014.
