Mediacom Expands Reach Of ‘Home Controller’

Says Home Automation Service Now Available To 1 Million Homes In Iowa 2/12/2014 12:52 PM Eastern

Mediacom Communications is ratcheting up its smart home efforts with word Wednesday that the operator has extended the reach of its home security and automation service to all parts of Iowa where the MSO provides broadband service.

Mediacom said the service, called Home Controller, is now available to about 1 million homes in markets it serves in Iowa.

Mediacom launched the service last September, about three months after it announced it was developing the product in partnership with a security, monitoring and automation dealer program operated by Comporium. Like similar services offered by MSOs such as Comcast, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable and Rogers Communications, Mediacom’s Home Controller is based on the iControl platform.

The service requires Mediacom’s Internet service and is available at price levels ranging from $34.99 per month to $44.99 per month, alongside a one-time purchase of a security equipment package that starts at $149.00. Depending on the tier, the service provides baseline security capabilities as well as remote access to the subscriber's home lighting and thermostat functions.

Mediacom has not released Home Controller subscriber figures, but the MSO plans to launch the product in additional states this year. Mediacom systems in Minnesota, Arizona and Indiana are among those that are next in line, according to Mediacom spokesman Tom Larson.
