More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the upcoming (July 28-31) version of The Independent Show, a gathering of cable operators, programmers and others interested in the National Cable Television Cooperative and the American Cable Association.
Panel sessions at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel will include such topics as changes occurring in the video and high-speed data businesses and the possibility of working with over-the-top programming providers, NCTC CEO Rich Fickle said.
Panels will lead off Monday morning with a scene-setting discussion including Penthera CEO Michael Willner (former chief executive at Insight Communications) and Atlantic Broadband CEO Edward Holleran. Other sessions will feature top Wall Street analysts and key programming leaders from NBCUniversal (Matt Bond) and Fox Networks (Mike Hopkins), Fickle noted.
Booth appearances will range from family members on History’s hit reality show Swamp People (booth 320, Monday, 2-4 p.m.) to Raquel Pomplun, this year’s Playmate of the Year and a fight jock on Blackbelt TV’s Rockin’ Rounds (booth 706, Monday, 1:45-4:30 p.m., and Tuesday, 9:30 a.m.-noon). Also on tap for meet-and-greets on Monday will be Florence Henderson at RLTV (booth 223), 2-4 p.m., and Minute to Win It host Apolo Anton Ohno at GSN (booth 304), 3-4 p.m.
HGTV Design Star winner David Bromstad (Monday) and Glenn Beck of TheBlaze (Tuesday) will be lunchtime speakers. Scripps Networks Interactive sponsored Bromstad, who also hosts HGTV's Color Splash. Al Jazeera America, launching on Aug. 20, is sponsoring the Tuesday luncheon, while TheBlaze sponsored Beck. Bromstad also will be at Scripps Networks Interactive (booth 504) 2-3:30 p.m. Monday.
Some 130 exhibitors – all either existing or prospective NCTC vendors – are expected to be on hand, according to the cooperative.
Among them, Arris Group (booth 507) will be displaying a whole-home solution with Moxi user interface that has now been deployed by NCTC members including Eagle Communications, Wave Broadband, WOW, Buckeye CableSystem and BendBroadband, the technology provider said.
SeaChange International (booth 519) said it will demonstrate how small and mid-sized cable television service providers can launch attractive multi-screen offerings including “blended entertainment services” incorporating over-the-top (OTT) content. It will be showing how its feature-rich Nitro subscriber experience software “will provide the subscriber touch point for demonstrations enabled by SeaChange’s open Adrenalin multi-screen video platform.” Pictured at the top of the story: the Nitro display on an iPad.
Viamedia (booth 107), the independent cable rep firm and provider of online advertising services targeting small and mid-sized distributors, said it will show off a new turn-key solution to provide local advertising sales for systems delivering as few as 1,500 television households. Services enabled include sales, traffic, cross channel marketing, encoding and billing, it said
Viamedia also released results of a consumer survey of TV and mobile viewing habits.
On the programmer side, Outside Television and the NCTC will announce a distribution agreement.
And Inspiration Networks-owned INSP, which is sponsoring the Monday luncheon, will say it has concluded a launch campaign that netted INSP about 100,000 new subscribers among NCTC members in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Iowa, Arizona, Missouri, Minnesota and North and South Carolina. Mark Kang, SVP of distribution for INSP, said in a release: “It’s always exciting to introduce the INSP brand of family entertainment to a new audience. People really love what they see and we’ve found that viewers are overwhelmingly positive about our wholesome and critically-acclaimed content. In turn, it helps our affiliates to keep and grow their subscriber base.”
