SCTE Cable-Tec Expo To Shine Spotlight on RDK

Execs From Comcast, TW Cable, Liberty Global and New RDK J.V. To Offer Progress Reports 10/08/2013 5:04 PM Eastern

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers has lined up engineering execs from some of the world’s top MSOs to offer respective updates on the Reference Design Kit (RDK) at this month’s Cable-Tec Expo in Atlanta.

The 75-minute “All Things RDK” session is slated to kick off Monday, Oct. 21 at 2:45 p.m. ET, and feature Steve Heeb, president and GM of recently formed RDK Management LLC; Steve Reynolds, senior vice president, premises technology, Comcast; Bill Warga, VP, technology, Liberty Global; and Matthew Zelesko, SVP, technology, Time Warner Cable.  Leslie Ellis, technology columnist for Multichannel News and president of Ellis Edits, will moderate.

They’re expected to discuss the current status of RDK and discuss current and future deployment plans for the pre-integrated software bundle for IP and hybrid set-tops and gateways that now counts more than 100 licensees.

Among the operators represented on the panel, Comcast is using the RDK for its X1 platform, and TWC has said it expects to transition to the RDK as it prepares to scale up a new, IP-capable platform that will tie in a cloud-based interface that is currently being tested. Liberty Global, meanwhile, has not publicly outlined its plans for the RDK, but the technology is expected to play a role as the MSO develops a new cloud-based version of its video user interface.

Among recent RDK-related activities, Heeb was named head of RDK Management, a venture managed by Comcast and TWC. S3 Group has signed on to oversee the venture’s code management function, while itaas has taken on responsibility for RDK Community Support Services.

The JV is also working on a 2.0 version that will make the RDK compatible with cable networks around the world that use the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) standard.

The SCTE Cable-Tec Expo is scheduled to run Oct. 21-24 at the Georgia World Congress Center.
