TWC Expands WiFi Network in N.C.

Time Warner Cable  has expanded its metro WiFi network to parts of Greensboro and Wilmington, N.C., spanning 2,400 hotspots in Greensboro and more than 1,400 so far in Wilmington.

TWC confirmed that it is using access points from Ruckus Wireless for the latest deployment expansion. The MSO also sources WiFi gear from Ericsson and Cisco Systems.

TWC said it has deployed more than 125,000 WiFi hotspots in areas such as Southern California, New York City, Charlotte, Raleigh, Myrtle Beach, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Kansas City and Hawaii. Qualified TWC broadband subs (including residential subs on the MSO’s “Standard” or higher cable modem tier) can tap into those hotspots for no additional cost. TWC is also selling access to that WiFi network starting at $2.95 per hour to non-subscribers.

TWC, which is being acquired by Charter Communications, is also part of a Cable WiFi roaming alliance that also includes Comcast, Cablevision Systems, Cox Communications and Bright House Networks, which is also in the process of merging with Charter.  MSOs in the Cable WiFi club have deployed more than 400,000 hotspots so far.  TWC also has a roaming deal with Boingo.

“We’re excited to extend our outdoor WiFi network to Greensboro and Wilmington,” said Rob Cerbone, VP of wireless product management for TWC, in a statement. “We continue to see customers embrace our free WiFi offering with over 400 million active sessions on our network so far this year.  We’ll continue to deploy additional hotspots in popular, high-traffic areas so our customers can enjoy fast, reliable connections for all their wireless devices on the go.”
