Verizon Boots Up Fios Service in Boston

Verizon said it has begun to offer a triple-play of broadband, TV and voice services powered by its fiber-fueled Fios platform in Boston about eight months after it announced the $300 million, six-year network investment plan.

Early on, Fios service are available in parts of Dorchester, Roslindale and West Roxbury. Verizon hasset up a web sitethat lets area residents find out when service will be offered in their individual neighborhoods as the telco moves on its “street-by-street, week-by-week” rollouts there.

Verizon, which competes in  Boston with Comcast and RCN, also plans to deploy Fios Roxbury's Dudley Square Innovation District before year's end. By then, more than 25,000 addresses in Boston will be able to order Fios.

Similar in some ways to Google Fiber’s “rally” process, Verizon and the city have been asking consumers to “vote” in order to bump them up higher on the priority list as the Fios expands across the city. For the buildout, Verizon has divided the city into four groups – A, B, C and D – with each group sub-divided into smaller Fiber Zones.

Verizon has placed more than 160 miles of fiber throughout Boston since the April announcement, the company said.

The company’s triple play bundle, with symmetrical 150 Mbps broadband service, Custom TV service, and voice, starts at $79.99 per month for the first year.

Verizon said it will also donate $100,000 to the Boston Public Library in support of a new Wi-Fi Hotspot Lending program, a two-year pilot effort that will focus on making 100 hotspots available to library patrons.
