FCC to Take Closer Look at Violent Programming

The Federal Communications Commission is planning to take a closer look at violent broadcast programming in response to concerns from Capitol Hill that blood-soaked movies and dramas are harmful to children.

FCC chairman Michael Powell, in an April 28 letter to House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman Joe Barton (R-Texas), said he had instructed the Media Bureau to prepare a notice of inquiry on violence.

The bureau's effort will apparently be restricted to violent programming aired by broadcasters, and not include cable programming.
