FreedomPop, Dish Mexico Mobilize J.V.

FreedomPop and Dish Mexico have struck up a mobile joint venture focused on FreedomPop’s “freemium” service model.

FreedomPop said the deal with Dish Mexico, company owned by Dish Network and MVS Comunicaciones, will serve as a blueprint for similar deals with carriers in countries and regions that include Germany, Italy, Australia and Asia that are expected to launch in 2017.

Under the deal announced Wednesday, FreedomPop will tap into Dish Mexico’s existing distribution to offer free mobile services in the country.

“We chose FreedomPop as our strategic partner in Mexico because our main objective is to constantly deliver consumer value and we have seen the company do this in other countries so the model is proven,”  Ernesto Vargas-Guajardo, CEO and director of MVS Comunicaciones, said in a statement.

“We know everyone in the world would love free voice, data and text and with our partnership with Dish Mexico and the upcoming four other international joint ventures, we are exponentially increasing our progress in making free mobile services a reality for everyone,” added Stephen Stokols, CEO and co-founder of FreedomPop.

FreedomPop said it has more than 1 million subscribers across the U.S., U.K. and Spain. FreedomPop’s service supplies a free bucket of texts and voice minutes before tiered pricing plans apply.
