Akimbo Debuts, Teams Up with

Akimbo Systems rolled out its Internet-to-TV video-on-demand service nationwide Monday.

The company also announced that Inc. ( will be the exclusive retailer of its “Akimbo Player” for the 2004 holiday season.

To use Akimbo’s service, consumers select programs that are downloaded to the Akimbo Player through a broadband-Internet connection, then view them on their televisions using Akimbo’s "Queue and View" format.

Beginning Monday, the Akimbo Player will be available in the Electronics store ( for $229.99. Consumers can sign up for the Akimbo service by visiting the company’s Web site (

Akimbo also announced that for a limited time, customers ordering an Akimbo Player from will receive three months of free Akimbo service (normally $9.99) or $30 off a lifetime subscription.

"With millions of customers who are interested in finding the latest in new entertainment options, provides a unique opportunity for Akimbo to get in front of many people who might not be satisfied with what they've been able to find on TV to date," Akimbo founder and executive vice president Steve Shannon said in a prepared statement.

Akimbo announced last month that it had added content from Turner Broadcasting System Inc., Granada TV and Quiksilver Inc. to its mix.
