C-SPAN Unfazed by GoDaddy.com Ad2/11/2005 4:40 AM Eastern
While the GoDaddy.com spot during Super Bowl XXXIX caused quite a flap in some quarters -- particularly the fourth, when Fox pulled a second airing of the commercial -- it didn’t produce much of a rise at C-SPAN.
The spot -- featuring a buxom young woman who almost falls out of her top while making the case for the Internet-domain registrar before a censorship committee -- spoofed the indecency hearings provoked by Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction during the halftime show of Super Bowl XXXVIII, as well as the government and public-affairs service, which is identified as G-SPIN in the 30-second spot created by The Ad Store.
“I’m a little bit surprised that we didn’t get any calls. I guess our organization is the video standard-bearer for Congressional hearings,” C-SPAN corporate vice president and general counsel Bruce Collins said. “Everybody got the joke -- it wasn’t C-SPAN.”
Collins added that the spot didn’t offend anyone at C-SPAN, saying, “It’s not a legal matter. [GoDaddy.com has] the right to parody.”
